Is It Safe to Take a Taxi from Cancun Airport to the Cozumel Ferry?

Written by: Kelly McLaughlin

August 8, 2026

I’ve lived in Cancun for more than 20 years, and I wouldn’t accept an unidentified taxi or ride from someone who approached me after I landed.

Can authorized transportation from Cancun Airport be safe? Yes. But you should know which company is providing the ride, what you’re going to pay and exactly where the driver will drop you off before you get into the vehicle.

There’s also an important Cozumel detail: a taxi or airport transfer cannot take you directly to the island. The ground portion of your journey ends near the Cozumel passenger ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen. You’ll continue to Cozumel by boat.

Why Finding a Taxi at Cancun Airport Isn’t So Simple

In many cities, you leave the airport, join an official taxi line and pay a metered or clearly posted fare.

Cancun Airport doesn’t feel that straightforward.

As you leave the terminal, you’ll encounter transportation representatives, tour sellers and people offering rides. Some work for established transportation companies. Others may not be especially clear about who they represent. They will most likely be yelling, “Taxi? Taxi? Taxi lady?”

After a flight, you’re tired, hot, carrying luggage and still have a ferry connection ahead of you. The person confidently waving you toward a vehicle may look official, but confidence isn’t documentation.

Personally, I don’t want to conduct a tiny transportation investigation outside the terminal after a flight. I want a company name, a confirmation and someone expecting me.

A Safe Ride Should Leave a Paper Trail

This is the part travelers don’t always think about.

A transportation reservation should document the company, pickup, price and destination. That gives you more than an organized arrival. It gives you accountability.

What happens if the driver takes you somewhere other than the agreed drop-off point or the price suddenly changes? What if you later notice an unfamiliar or higher-than-agreed charge on your credit card? What if you leave your phone or your child’s backpack in the vehicle?

Without a receipt, reservation or company contact, who do you call?

With a documented reservation, you have a company to contact and trip details they can trace.

With an informal ride, you may have no reservation number, receipt or reliable contact information. Once the vehicle drives away, you may not even know which company operated it.

That paper trail matters before, during and after the ride.

Why I Prefer to Arrange Transportation Before Flying

Getting to Cozumel from Cancun Airport already involves more than one stage. I don’t want to improvise the first part after landing.

You can try to arrange a ride at the airport, but you’ll need to work out quite a few things while standing outside with your luggage.

Who is providing the ride? Is the provider authorized and insured? Is the quoted price for one passenger or the entire vehicle? Does it include every airport charge? Where exactly will the driver leave you in Playa del Carmen? Are ferry tickets included or separate? Who do you call if something goes wrong?

That’s a lot of homework to do at the curb.

Arranging transportation in advance lets you research the company, agree on the price, confirm the ferry drop-off and save the contact information before leaving home.

When you land, your job should be finding the representative named in your confirmation—not comparing transportation offers while trying to coordinate the rest of your journey to Cozumel.

Airport Red Flags Worth Knowing

Just keep walking, smile and say “No, gracias” if anyone:

  • Pressures you to leave immediately
  • Won’t clearly identify the transportation company
  • Avoids confirming the total price
  • Changes the price after you agree
  • Cannot explain where you’ll be dropped off
  • Claims the vehicle will take you directly to Cozumel
  • Tries to move you to another company or vehicle
  • Asks you to cancel an existing reservation
  • Claims your driver didn’t arrive but cannot confirm your booking details

One of my strongest recommendations is this: if someone says your pre-booked driver is unavailable, contact the company yourself.

Don’t cancel a confirmed reservation based only on what another person at the airport tells you. The arrivals area is not the place to outsource your critical thinking to the most persistent person in the room.

Can a Taxi Take You Directly to Cozumel?

No. Cozumel is an island.

Unless you are taking a separate vehicle ferry service, the usual visitor journey from Cancun Airport has two parts:

Ground transportation from Cancun Airport to the Cozumel passenger ferry area in Playa del Carmen

A passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel

Your airport driver’s responsibility ends on the mainland. Confirm where the vehicle will drop you off and how you’ll reach the ferry entrance with your luggage.

You should also confirm whether the quoted transportation price applies to the entire vehicle or each passenger and whether ferry tickets are included or purchased separately.

“Transportation to Cozumel” sounds like one simple ride, but it usually means a ground transfer followed by a ferry crossing. Your reservation should make that distinction clear.

What I Recommend for Every Cozumel Arrival

Whether it’s your first trip or your fifteenth, I recommend reserving your airport transportation before you fly.

Save a screenshot of your confirmation, meeting instructions, drop-off location and company phone number. I would also keep my ferry information somewhere accessible without relying on airport Wi-Fi.

When you arrive, match the company and representative to your reservation. If you can’t find anyone, or somebody tells you the booking has changed, contact the company directly.

A minute spent checking the details is never wasted. Pressure is not a reason to hurry; it’s a reason to slow down.

So, Is a Taxi from Cancun Airport to the Cozumel Ferry Safe?

An authorized ride with an identified provider, confirmed price and clear ferry drop-off can be safe.

What I would avoid is accepting an unidentified ride without knowing the company, total price or where I’ll be left in Playa del Carmen. Honestly, I would not arrive at Cancun Airport without my transportation already arranged, period.

I want to land, check in with my transportation company and be on my way. I don’t want to negotiate, compare offers or wonder whether I’ll be dropped close to the correct ferry terminal.

There’s no reason to begin a vacation with that much uncertainty when everything can be arranged in advance.
