Greetings from Isla Mujeres, Mexico, my fave laid-back escape just off the coast of Cancun. This gorgeous little island isn't just a destination for beach lovers and snorkelers, it's also a culinary hotspot for foodies. From the freshest seafood of your life to traditional Mayan dishes, there's a world of flavors waiting to be explored. Here are the top five dishes I think you absolutely must try when you visit Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Authentic Mexican Cuisine and Fresh Seafood: Isla Mujeres Delivers

One of the best things about living in Mexico is exploring the incredibly diverse cuisine of the country. Did you know that the food of Mexico is a designated “cultural heritage of humanity” by UNESCO? Yes, it really is that good and that important to the world.
I have indulged in amazing regional dishes all over Mexico but it is always so good to come back home to the Mexican Caribbean and the Yucatan Peninsula. Getting to Isla Mujeres for a weekend means I will be a happy little foodie and I will definitely be eating well.

1. Tikin Xic Fish: An Isla Mujeres Treasure Trove of Flavor

I stand by my opinion that this traditional Mayan dish is the number one must-try dish for any seafood lover visiting Isla Mujeres. Run, don't walk to order Tikin Xic fish (pronounced "teekeen sheek"), typically grouper or red snapper, marinated in achiote paste and sour orange juice, then wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked over a grill. The result is a fish that's moist, flaky, and infused with a tangy, smoky flavor that's truly unique to the region. Served with a side of pickled red onions, this dish will transport your senses straight to the heart of Mayan culinary tradition. Tikin Xic Fish is absolutely worth the trip to Isla Mujeres from Cancun.

2. Isla Mujeres Fresh Seafood: Ceviche

Ceviche is found in many coastal areas in Latin America, but Isla Mujeres offers its own distinct take on this popular dish. Prepared with freshly caught fish or seafood like shrimp and octopus, the ceviche here is marinated in freshly squeezed lime juice and mixed with chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and fiery habanero peppers. Served cold, ceviche is the perfect refreshing treat after a day under the sun, especially when paired with a crispy tostada and an ice-cold beer. I’ve had ceviche on Isla Mujeres that was so fresh, oh man, I watched them reel it in and then it was on my plate, bam!

3. Cochinita pibil: Best breakfast food on Isla Mujeres

Cochinita Pibil is my personal fave Yucatecan dish that brings the deep, earthy flavors of the region to your lips. This slow-roasted pork is marinated in a sensational mix of achiote paste and citrus juices, then wrapped in banana leaves and cooked until tender. Traditionally served with pickled red onions (sin cebolla for me please) and habanero salsa (oh yes but be careful, little by little!)This dish offers a rich blend of savory, sweet, and spicy that's truly unforgettable. It's one of my go-to Isla Mujeres dishes for breakfast, cochinita tortas are my weakness.

4. Queso relleno: Savory sensation of the Yucatan

I love queso relleno. I mean LOVE. This dish is a testament to the culinary fusion that characterizes the Yucatan Peninsula. Queso relleno starts with a hollowed-out ball of Edam cheese, which is then stuffed with a savory mixture of seasoned ground meat, raisins, capers, and olives. The whole thing is bathed in a rich, creamy white sauce and a red tomato-based sauce, the rich blend of flavors is totally unique.

5. Marquesitas de mi corazon: Yucatecan dessert on Isla Mujeres

End your Isla Mujeres days with a sweet treat of marquesitas, a popular Yucatecan street food that's found its way to the heart of the island. These crispy crepes are rolled up and filled with sweet or savory ingredients, the classic version features shredded Edam cheese and dulce de leche. I am partial to a marquesita with cream cheese and blackberry jam! You'll find the colorful carts selling marquesitas on Isla Mujeres and there will be lines of people waiting for their delicious custom creations.
