Isla Mujeres (pronounced “EES-lah moo-HAIR-ays“) is an island off the coast of Cancun, at the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in the tropical region of the Mexican Caribbean. Dreamy beaches, pirate tales and ancient Mayan history and some of the most amazing ocean activities for divers, snorkelers, anglers and those who just want to float the day away.
The best way to get to Isla Mujeres from the Cancun Airport
Welcome to our Isla Mujeres Guide for 2025! I have lived in Cancun for 20 years and I LOVE exploring this stunning island paradise. As a Cancun local with a deep love for the beauty and culture of the Mexican Caribbean, Isla Mujeres holds a special place in my heart.
It is an easy weekend escape for Cancun locals and one of my favourite things to do is hop on the Isla Mujeres ferry and see where the wind takes me. Isla Mujeres is a wonderful destination for families traveling to Cancun. Lovingly referred to simply as “Isla”, let's go visit our fave little island.
It is an island soooo, you gotta take a boat. Getting the ferry to Isla Mujeres is super convenient from the Gran Puerto terminal in Puerto Juarez with all the modern amenities. Getting to the Isla ferry dock from the Cancun Airport is easiest with private transportation for sure, taking the bus and messing around with taxis with luggage and heat, mmm, no thanks. There are ferries that depart from the hotel zone of Cancun, most often taking day trippers.

The ferry ride to Isla Mujeres takes approximately 20 minutes, it can vary depending on the weather and the conditions of the Bay of Mujeres. The ferries are large, you are not crossing on a rowboat, you can sit comfortably in air conditioning or ride outside for some incredible views of blue sea and sky. You can buy a beer for the crossing and start feeling the island vibes with some live music on board if you are lucky. And hey, with the right Cancun Airport Transfer, you can get a beer or refreshments for your transfer to Isla ferry dock. Cheers to that, salud!
Isla Mujeres is pretty small, you won't find huge sprawling resorts like you do in the Riviera Maya. There are a couple of all-inclusives but mostly intimate accommodations ranging from rustic to the most luxurious place you have ever been in your life.

My first time visiting Isla Mujeres in 2003, I was soooo EXCITED to rent a golf cart and toot my way around at my own pace. Golf carts are the preferred way to get around Isla. Lots of folks ride bikes or choose to just walk and stroll, soaking in the vibrant colors and local flavor. The island itself is only 5 miles/8 kms long, getting around on Isla Mujeres is easy, you have to try really hard to get lost.
From the quaint shops and cafes on the main pedestrian strip of Hidalgo in the town center to the rugged cliffs of Punta Sur, the island welcomes visitors to explore at their leisure, nothing is rushed on Isla. There are taxis available for longer distances or moving with your luggage, you’ll find a taxi stand when you land at the ferry dock.
One of the greatest attractions of Isla Mujeres lies beneath its turquoise waters. As a big time snorkeler, I've had the joy of exploring the vibrant coral reefs of Isla Mujeres many, many times. Marvel at the colors in the coral gardens, swim through huge schools of brightly colored fish and explore the underwater museum of MUSA. You can snorkel from shore but the best way to snorkel Isla Mujeres is on a boat excursion with expert guides.
Scuba diving on Isla Mujeres is a draw for both beginner and expert divers. The water is exceptionally clear, the marine life abundant and the dive shops, dive masters and captains are experts in giving you the time of your life under the sea. Night dives, wreck diving and even diving with sailfish from Isla Mujeres during the right season (this is on my personal bucket list)! Pure excitement and natural beauty.
How is the food on Isla Mujeres? Seriously, insanely, massively delicious and authentic. No visit would be complete without digging into the island's culinary delights. From fresh ceviche and seafood tacos to traditional Mexican dishes with a Caribbean twist, the local restaurants on Isla Mujeres offer a culinary journey that is simply unforgettable.
Be sure to sample the fresh catch of the day at one of the beachfront restaurants, where you can dine al fresco while watching the sun dip below the horizon. The tikin xic fish is a must, a local specialty of the island. Best tips for finding an Isla Mujeres restaurant? Look for the pelicans, plastic chairs and frost on the margarita glasses.
As the day draws to a close, there's no better way to unwind than by admiring the sunset from one of Isla Mujeres' beaches. Settle into a comfy lounge chair at one of the beach clubs on Playa Norte or Lancheros and watch the sun go down with an ice cold drink and ceviche. Toast the island, take lots of pictures and embrace the island vibes. You'll never forget your first time and your first time will not be your last. Everyone goes back to Isla.
